Summer’s Coming Up: Get a Swimsuit-Ready Body With Laser Hair Removal
If swimsuit season has you dreading the nearly daily hair removal process, consider getting laser hair removal to make this summer — and all summers to come — a breeze. Learn what this procedure entails here.

Warm weather is here; before you know it, summer will be, too. For many people, summer signals beach vacations, trips to your neighborhood aquatic center, and backyard pool parties.

All of these swimsuit-required activities might have you dreading all that shaving, waxing, and plucking you have to do to not only prepare your body for a swimsuit, but also to maintain that hair-free aesthetic.

Because body hair removal can be an annoying and seemingly never-ending process, Ben Cilento, MD, MHA, and the rest of our team at Butterfly MedSpa and Wellness offer laser hair removal at our two offices in Spring and The Woodlands, Texas.

Learn everything you need to know about this innovative cosmetic treatment, including how it can give you more time and head space to enjoy everything that summer has to offer.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a noninvasive cosmetic procedure used to remove unwanted hair. During the treatment, a powerful, highly concentrated laser emits specific wavelengths of light energy into the desired treatment area.

The pigments in the area’s active-growth hair follicles absorb this energy. As it heats the follicle from the inside out, it effectively “flips the switches” on its ability to grow shafts of hair.

Once those hair follicles are turned off, they can no longer grow hair. However, the light energy is only absorbed by hair that’s in the anagen, or growth phase, and your hair follicles won’t be in the same phase at the same time. So, you’ll need multiple sessions, spaced out over the course of several weeks, to achieve complete hair removal results.

This treatment can be used to remove virtually any area of unwanted hair. Popular areas of concern include the face, underarms, legs, back, chest, buttocks, and bikini area. You can have hair removed from any and all of these in a single session, too.

Does laser hair removal need any preparation?

As with any cosmetic treatment, before getting laser hair removal, our team sits down with you to ensure you qualify for the procedure and that it can help you achieve your goals.

Laser hair removal may not be a good fit for you if you’re pregnant, taking certain acne medications, or prone to cold sores. In addition, it’s important to know that laser hair removal works best on those with light skin and dark hair. If you have darker skin or lighter hair, the treatment will still work, but it may not be as effective.

If our team gives you the green light for laser hair removal, you need to avoid tanning beds, sun exposure, and waxing or plucking any of your body hair. The day before your session, shave the targeted treatment area so the hair isn’t longer than a grain of rice.

What happens during a laser hair removal session?

When you get to our office for your session, you relax in a comfortable chair and place goggles over your eyes to protect them from the laser light. We thoroughly cleanse the treatment area and numb it with a topical anesthetic to make the procedure as comfortable as possible — the laser feels like a tiny rubber band snapping against your skin as we pass it over the area.

The length of your session can range from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the size and hair follicle density of the treatment area, as well as how many areas you’re having treated.
